As wedding coordinators, one of the most common questions we hear from couples is: “Should we do a first look, or wait to see each other at the ceremony?”

It’s such a personal decision, but after coordinating hundreds of weddings, we can confidently say that a first look can completely transform your day in the best way possible. From reducing stress to improving your wedding timeline, there are so many reasons couples (and photographers!) love them.

If you’re planning your wedding and still on the fence, here are a few reasons to do a first look, straight from a coordinators who have seen it all!

1. A First Look Helps Calm Nerves

Wedding days are emotional and exciting but also super nerve wracking! Many couples tell us that the moment they see their partner during the first look is when all the nerves melt away. That private moment gives you both a chance to breathe, connect, and share genuine moment before the whirlwind of the day begins!

2. You Get More Time Together on Your Wedding Day

Think about it.. without a first look, you’ll spend most of your wedding day apart until the ceremony. With a first look, you actually get more hours together on your special day! You’ve invested so much time into planning this day, you should be able to enjoy it with each other!

3. Your Wedding Timeline Will Feel Less Rushed

From a day-of coordination perspective, this is one of the biggest benefits. A first look allows your photographer to take couple portraits, bridal party photos, and even some family pictures before the ceremony. That means less rushing between ceremony and reception, no keeping guests waiting, and more time for you to actually enjoy cocktail hour. Your wedding timeline will feel more relaxed and organized!

4. You Still Get That “Aisle Moment”

One of the biggest myths I hear is that doing a first look “ruins the magic” of seeing each other at the altar. But here’s the truth, the ceremony moment still feels completely different. You’ll still feel all the emotions, but this time with the comfort of knowing you’ve already shared an intimate moment together!

    Bottom Line?

At the end of the day, your wedding is about celebrating love and connection, not rushing from one photo to the next. A first look can give you space to slow down, breathe, and truly enjoy every moment.

As a wedding day-of coordinator, our top priority is helping couples feel present and stress-free. And for many of my couples, doing a first look is one of the best decisions they make!
